넘치는 이미지와 그 처리기술은 새로운 연금술처럼 복잡하게 응용된다. 더이상 망막에 도달하지 않은채 데이터를 위한 데이터로서 우리의 삶을 지도하기 위해 현실에 침투한다. 세계 곳곳을 비추는 카메라들은 생활세계의 면면들, 사람들과 동식물의 움직임과 부재, 땅과 물의 이미지들이 보이는 친숙한 일기같은 이미지, 휘발되는 사건들을 전송한다. <이웃들>은 전시장 내외부에 설치한 보급형 IP카메라들, 온라인에 공개된 라이브 웹캠의 이미지 피드와 이에 대한 컴퓨터 비전 모니터링을 실시간으로 구성하는 현재시제로 쓰여지는 영상이다. 영상은 작가의 통제를 벗어나 자신들끼리 관계를 쌓아가는 이미지들의 불안정함, 우발성 혹은 단조로움의 극적 긴장으로 채워지는 한편, 감시와 보안, 사업과 홍보를 위한 데이터 원자재이자 기술적으로 자(동)율화되어 생산, 유통, 응용되는 이미지의 의미를 살핀다. 작가는 전시장에 설치된 스크린을 하나의 장소로 여기며 목적과 의미, 이름과 이야기로 세계를 구성하며 모여드는 세계 이웃들과의 씬을 상상한다.

Modern days’ inundation of digital images and the technology for processing them have complex applications — as if they are the new alchemy. They no longer reach our retinae; as data for the sake of data, they infiltrate reality and guide our lives. Gazing out at myriad spots across the globe, the network cameras transmit real-time images of happenings in everyday life; the movement and/or absence of people, animal, and plants; somewhat clichéd scenery featuring lands and waters; short-living incidents, etc. Neighbors is a video work that is composed at the present moment, utilizing real-time image feeds from inexpensive IP cameras installed in and around the gallery and public live webcams, as well as their computer vision interpretation. The work examines the instability of images that continuously proliferate out of artist’s control while multiplying the interrelationships between themselves and contemplates the meaning of images that are raw material data (charged with dramatic tension of accidentality and monotony) for surveillance, security, business, and advertising and that become technologically automatic and autonomous to be produced, circulated, and utilized. The artist regards the screen installed at the exhibition as a place and imagine a scene featuring all the neighbors assembled from all around the world, who constitute their own universe with their names and stories and their purpose and meaning.
