One Opening (2015)
Video with sound, 30’ 2”
Commissioned by ARCO Insa Art Space 2015

Insa Art Space (Seoul, Korea) has a peculiar status as an ‘alternative exhibition space founded and backed by the state.’ Such situation has been creating a permanent tension between the cultural policies of the government and the gallery, whose function and status has been continuously fluctuating as a result. One Opening was created from documents in Insa Art Space’s archive from 2000 to 2008, the period when the Korean contemporary art scene was at its peak in terms of activeness, dealing with a certain effect that can be sensed in the archive and that has persisted since a close past until the present. The video follows the preparation process of an exhibition of which it is a part—in parallel with scattered montages of images, words, sounds from catalogues, documentations and managerial papers exhumed from the archive of Insa Art Space—and shows a performative, in some way symbolic, performance being staged with the gallery’s curators taking part. One Opening discovers, among the intense legacy of art practices from the past, the remnants of attempts at adapting to globalization and guidelines for artists to be promoted as an artist and transform the vestiges into a question about the present status of the art.

* One Opening was commissioned by Insa Art Space’s 2015 curator workshop exhibition titled After-piece.
