Part-time Suite is a collective run by Jaeyoung Park, Byungjae Lee, and Miyeon Lee. The group was formed in2009, and in the short period of time since then it has organized an impressive series of works. Apart from its various installation projects, it has produced publications and put on musical gigs and other performances; the group has consistently demonstrated through these works its open but critical viewpoints. As the members of the group relate the story, they came together as a collective and started calling themselves a “part-time suite”as a practical expression of their will to recognize that the reality each of them is facing is insecure and tiring, and that they are willing to transform it in positive ways. The harsh reality they are referring to could be a reference to the “generational phenomenon” much discussed in Korea today; or it could be a reference, more specifically, to the individual reality that artists face in contemporary Korea with all its economic and other contradictions. In either case, what is significant is the power of the paradox in the attitude of these artists. Their vulnerability, and the limitations and restrictions they face in reality are also the most significant and powerful sources that make their artistic activities possible and forceful.
In 2009 they put on a series of works, Under Interior, off-off-stage, and Loop the Loop. For these works, they found and rented unassuming and often out of sight urban spaces including a basement, a municipal vacant lot, and rooftops. These are spaces without any specifically designated usage, or an unclear one; finding and renting such a space, in and of itself, is already an interesting starting point for their projects. Where they choose to borrow the social form of “renting” a space is where the usage of that space is adrift. Based on the social/spatial restrictions inherent in such a space, they appropriate it wholly, and with a new language. The method of their appropriation is arbitrary, nondeterministic, sensitive at multiple levels, and supple so that the result is akin to “a very critical lyric poem.” Thus, while one is visiting one of these spaces, what is invisible about the space wraps itself, unnoticed, around one, revealing itself.
UnderInterior, the first project undertaken by Part-time Suite, was an installation in a basement the group came upon quite by accident in the neighborhood of Ahyeon-dong, Seoul. The basement was filled with water, and objects here and there, whose identity one could barely make out, hinted that they were remnants from an unspecified past. Entering the basement, one felt the mustiness; the walls and ceilings were stained with mildew; in the darkness, a blurry light, image, and text soaked on the surface of the water that reflected them; the water that covered the floor could be felt through the rubber boots one was wearing. This was a special adventure where one experienced a space as a texture. Part-time Suite rented this basement space; distorting nothing and competing with nothing, it awakened a drowned energy and made a gift of sharing that energy.
off-off-stage is a project in which Part-time Suite rented a vacant lot ensconced in the innercity building forest of Seoul’s Gwanghwamun area; the group temporarily turned this lot into a night time only exhibition space. Visitors had their ears covered and only had a flashlight to navigate the space; they became actors who would reveal the secrets of the darkness and the vacant lot, as well as the aimlessness of prowling about. Also, a videotape records the performance in which the artists are tossing small illuminated “pyramids” in the dark, throwing them over a wall of another vacant lot to which entrance was prohibited. This film is strongly symbolic of the attitude that Part-time Suite takes as artists.
Loop the Loop was part of the group show Perspective Strikes Back. For this project, Part-time Suite rentedor obtained permission to use the rooftops of buildings near the gallery to put on a performance, make installations, and show films. From one of the rooftops one could see banners and toy windmills installed on other roof tops nearby; this allowed viewers to visually “jump” over the physical limitations demarcated by eachrooftop. On one of these rooftops, members of the group carried out a dramatic performance in which they hadto depend on each other to walk on the rooftop edges; this performance made a deep impression in that itraised profound questions about the common conditions the artists faced in reality outside of the group, as wellas questions about the nature of their relationship within the group; perhaps, more importantly, it was a meditative exercise that recognized the fateful task artists have of constantly subverting themselves.
Recently, Part-time Suite conducted Drop By Then, a travel project. The members traveled to the vicinity ofthe Civilian Control Line, an area near the Demilitarized Zone in South Korea where restricted civilian traffic isallowed but strictly controlled. They recorded and filmed local scenes, spontaneous performances, and the stories they collected on the road; they also produced drawings based on their records and delivered them to others who participated in this project. Their work exposed the fears from the past that continue to affect the present.
Multi Purpose Base Camp is a collaborative project in which the members of Part-time Suite are “seeking forms of possible collaboration” with other artists by inviting them to work with the group; this project is verymuch in line with their sustained efforts, from the beginning, to push the boundaries of the collective’s artistic network, a carefully thought out objective.
Upon encountering the works of Part-time Suite, one always comes to linger within them. This lingering is the natural response of the body and mind that have been invited to a time that has supplely separated itself far from all forms of restriction and compulsive goals. The new model of a collective that these artists are suggesting, and the fact that they take a collective approach in addressing the social issues they face commonly without encroaching on the individual, is a significant challenge on the part of an emerging generation and one that certainly deserves to be examined seriously.
