Soft Dynamics (2017)
Video with sound, 14’ 43”
Commissioned by ARTZONE, Kyoto University of Art And Design 2017

The craft of karakuri, the Japanese automata whose origin traces back to the Edo period, provide good entertainment and fantasy for us. However, today’s robot technologies are much more than mere astonishment. Robots have become a national project, a cutting-edge product, and the sum of a range of technical expertise including computing, brain science, telecommunications, and mechanics; now they are evolving into a more autonomous form. Technology is considered value neutral on its own, but its application on certain purposes can be destructive. Disaster rescue robots can also be deployed in a battlefield; various sensors and self-reinforcement learning algorithms that enable mechanic automation of actions can be used as a weapon for surveillance, search, identification, and tracking of peoples, objects, and spaces. In anticipation of a society in which we come rapidly or gradually to coexist with robots, Soft Dynamics is a video essay, the prologue for many questions to be posed about the social premises and values rapidly redefined by technology.

The term “robot” first appears in a play by Czech writer Karel Čapek. As shown in its etymology, signifying slavery or tough work, it was a metaphor for the working class; the play in fact reaches a hopeful conclusion in which the robots take over the world. However, the dialogue of robots, who talk in their own language and dream of human-like death, reminds us of the radical imagination of today’s robot technologies. This talk is displayed like a transparent gravestone, translated into the language of the leading countries in the development of robot technologies.
